Sealants in Sugar Land, Texas
We offer sealants or preventive resins at Smiles on Greatwood Dentistry. Dental sealants are one of the most commonly used as preservation materials. The importance of a dental sealant is to prevent the risk of developing dental caries. Sealants are non- invasive procedure that are commonly done by the hygienist or the doctor. At our office we recommend parents to bring their child in every 6 months to make sure the sealants are still intact. The smallest chip or break can lead to leakage and trap food and bacteria underneath, which can cause decay.
Dental sealants are a protective procedure, minimally invasive, that promotes early intervention to prevent carious abrasions to form in the pit and fissures of the premolars and molar teeth. These pit and fissures are the biting surfaces of the teeth and are the most susceptible in harboring plaque and bacteria; causing carious lesions.
This procedure does not require any anesthesia so placing sealants or preventive resin is fairly painless. First, the tooth or teeth to be sealed are examined to make sure there are no cavities on the occlusal surface of the teeth. Prior to the application of a tooth conditioner, the tooth surface should be cleaned by air polishing, polishing with non-fluoridated pumice paste or hydrogen peroxide. All heavy stains, deposits, debris and plaque should be removed. After cleaning the occlusal surface, dry the area thoroughly for 10 seconds.
The tooth will then be cleaned and dried. Then etch is applied that will slightly abrade the surface, to make the sealing material adhere better. The tooth is then rinsed and dried again. The sealant is then painted on the tooth in liquid form and reinforced in about a minute after the use of curing light.
After, the occlusion is examined with articulating paper. If sealant material is presented interproximal, a scaler is used to remove excess. If occlusion is high, slow-speed rotary bur is used to adjust the occlusion.
