What are Dental Partials?
Partial dentures are designed to fill the gap of missing teeth on either arch.
This is a plate with one or more false teeth on it. It may be all acrylic or a mixture of metal and acrylic. Both types may have retainers to help keep the denture in place in your mouth. There are two types of partial dentures: fixed and removable.
Fixed partial dentures are non-removable oral devices. Dental implant bridges are artificial tooth roots with dental crowns that provide a permanent base, attached directly into the jaw to replace one or more missing teeth. Fixed bridges are a great solution for those who have a single missing tooth but healthy teeth on each side. The bridge consists of crowns on each side and a pontic in between that replaces the missing tooth. Fixed bridges are cemented and remain in your mouth at all times.
Removable partial dentures are designed to be removed and placed into the mouth. They replace one or more missing teeth. Some partial dentures are made almost entirely of acrylic that has wire clasps that attach to any remaining natural teeth. Cast metal removable partial dentures are the most common type that consists of replacement teeth made of durable materials on a rigid cast metal frame. The metal frame is not visible, but the clasps may be seen when smiling. Made with acrylic, a cast metal removable partial denture can last for many years.
The fit of the partial is very important to evenly distribute your biting, prevent distress to your gums and natural teeth, and look and function as normally as possible.
Partial dentures are usually recommended when:
- You have one or more missing teeth
- You struggle to eat certain types of food due to missing, crooked or damaged teeth
- You have chronic toothaches
- Your teeth re loose or shifting
- You are self-conscious about your smile due to missing teeth
